Is not bricked, sometimes the dongles are a pain to be recognized by windows....there's talk about this in other threads.

I just contacted the reseller (modchipsdirect) and they said to send the dongle back to them.

This is so lame. Now I have to pay to send the thing back to them. They should be sending me pre-paid postage to send the thing back to them.

I swear if my replacement dongle craps out on me I'll never buy another one.

My device was reported as defective and my replacement should be here sometime tomorrow. I'm going to try using the PS3 CFW updater first, before attempting to use the PC updater again.

If anyone runs into the same problem as the first post (which is same problem I had) of "device not recognized, error 43 (device malfunction)" then you have to replace the device.

I'm not sure if this is defective or if the dongle bricks easily, but either way the dongle is useless when this happens and needs to be replaced.

UPDATE:

Ok I got my replacement cobraUSB today. I repeatedly ran the PC update flasher for 2-3 HOURS before it finally went up to 100%. I tried...and tried....and tried it again and again. After almost giving up, I switched USB ports for the 1st time, and attempted again about 8 more times before it finally completed.

All I got to say is the PC updater (at least from my experience with it on Windows 7 64Bit) is probably the most unstable/unreliable piece of software I have EVER used in my life.

I recommend buying Cobra from a source that pre-flashes the dongle for you, so that you can skip directly to using it, and updating the CobraUSB directly from the PS3.

Goodbye crappy PC updater software. Hello PS3 USB Updater (for future updates).

Well its good you got the replacement working. There are times the dongle does need replacing for sure.

I am on second dongle but I have no issues with Windows x64 and using the pc updater.

I know people have a lot of issues at times with these types of usb dongles or even the ones for DS flash cards.

It is always a good idea to clean the registry, and remove all previous usb entries. On some computers a total drain is necessary as well.

I like my alienware computers for that as its pretty simple, just shut down, unplug it and hold the power button for a minute, as you can do that when having usb issues. On my Evga computer I just pull the battery for about 10-30 mins.

Then when you boot up it reconnects your usb devices.
If we all are here to help others , then what exactly are others here for?

I unplugged all my USB devices and restarted the computer before beginning the update process. Even disabled my security software. Not sure what the issue is because I use a handful of USB devices on this machine daily with no problems.

Its fine now since I can update from the PS3, but I just feel bad if anyone else runs into trouble, and according to my searches on google (when I had my first dongle) there are a good bit of people saying they had to run the updater many times before it succeeded.
