Help installing Cobra CFW 3.55 on OFW 3.55

Postby Cyath » Mon May 07, 2012 2:59 pm

Ok, thanks to the help of the forum, I finally have my updated dongle, backup games and PS3 ready to go!

I followed all the instructions in the forum guide until this part :

"Cobra 3.55 cfw installation

1. Download the PS3UPDAT.PUP file of the cobra CFW. The MD5 of this file is
0922794CFB2FA4CB3DF71C8C3E391E08.."

However, when I navigate to the Games section of the XMB, there is no option to "Install Package Files" or anything of that sort, just saved data, Playstation Store etc...

I see in the instructions there is an option to install the CFW in recovery mode, as it says here :

"4. If you are on firmware 3.55, ofw or cfw, in some consoles you will be able to update using the
XMB. In other consoles, you will be given an error complaining that latest firmware is already
installed."

I don't get the error message that the latest firmware is installed, I just don't see the option to install Cobra CFW 3.55 anywhere.

I am quite sure I put the file in the proper place - as the instructions state, put PS3UPDAT.PUP into the /PS3/UPDATE/ folder. (I put it into an external HD I am using to store my backup games) And the switch of the Cobra USB is flipped to the middle switch (PS3) although this step doesn't use the USB.

Sorry for making so many threads and asking so many questions, just that I am not too good with computer/tech stuff and I want to be 100% certain I don't brick my PS3, because it was quite expensive :)

Thanks to all the support I have gotten on the forums so far - you guys are great! I hope this is the last step before I can finally play all my PS3 backups...

Leave the dongle in pc mode for both PS3 and pc.

You need to install the Cobra CFW, and if xmb is not letting you then you must use recovery menu.

steps for recovery menu.

1. Turn off Playstation 3.
2. Hold The power button down; The system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be promted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

install the CFW and you should see the options present, you can also verify which firmware you're running by looking in settings/system settings/system information.

After you are able to run Pkgs, I recommend you install Condor Updater it'll make switching Firmwares by recovery menu much easier....hope this helps; please post back if it did, good luck.

OK, I followed all the instructions and it worked! I managed to install Cobra USB Manager as well. :)

But now I have a different problem (which I didn't want to make a new thread for...) there are no games displayed in the Cobra USB Manager. According to the guide, I placed the games in /dev_hdd0/GAMES (that is from the root directory right?)

Each game is in a folder, for instance "BLES01184", then inside the folder are 2 folders named PS3_GAME, PS3_UPDATE and a file named PS3_DISC.SFB. I placed the BLES01184 folder into /dev_hdd0/GAMES in the root directory, but evidently that is the wrong thing to do as nothing is being displayed in Cobra USB Manager...

This seems to be the final step (for real this time!) and I think I am just putting the folders in the wrong place, so can anyone tell me what to do? Thanks!

Yes you have the structure correct. USB Manager will say Games by the Square Button. That button also changes the modes.

You can hit L2 to refresh.

You can also use mmCM 4.02 manager, which is now the supported manager for Cobra. The Cobra USB manager is not being updated anymore, that I know of.

mine is "/games" for both int and ext hdds, but it shouldn't matter... try lower-case, see if that helps.
also use mmCM, it's much better than the Cobra manager, and will find your games.

Ok, I changed both the /GAMES folder to lower-case and I installed MM, but I still can't get my games working...

What happens is that after MM installs, I start it up and get the 3 disclaimer screens (I select yes to all) and then I go back to the main menu. After that I run MM again and my screen blinks a few times, then I get sent back to the main menu again. I tried both Cobra USB Manager and MM but one won't display games (Cobra USB Manager) and one just sends me back to the main menu.

What do I do now?

Ok I am not sure being your games are on internal hdd. I would recheck with filemanager in mmCM that you have your games in the proper format

Did you ftp the games to the internal hdd, or copy them from disc?
Shouldn't matter though, as long as they are in proper format.

Did you try the refresh button under GAMES Tab

They were on my external HDD - I thought Cobra USB could read games from the external HDD?

In any case, I transferred a game to the internal HDD to test, but it still didn't show up, and I still have the problem with MM in that the screen blinks 3 times and then sends me back to the main menu.

I was thinking that maybe the game didn't show up because it was in the wrong directory? I copied it using the XMB's Video -> Display All - Copy function, so maybe it didn't go to the games directory of the internal HDD.

Is there anyway to fix this? I noticed that multiman has a graphical GUI, will that allow me to navigate the PS3 file system like in Windows? (But my MM doesn't start at all...)

The search continues!
